Students occupying faculties of the University of Novi Sad have called on all fellow citizens to join them today, January 17, at a major protest titled “What Does Victory Mean?” which they are organizing in their city. According to earlier announcements, the gathering begins at 6 PM at Freedom Square, and the students have sent their final messages ahead of the major rally, revealing what attendees can expect.
Students occupying faculties of the University of Novi Sad are organizing a major protest this evening at 6 PM at Freedom Square.
As they explained to Nova.rs, they want to share their work so far and bring it closer to fellow citizens who have been supporting them for more than a year.
“It was precisely this desire that led to the planning of this protest. We want to show them our ideas for the mechanisms that will guide us in the fight against corruption at the institutional level,” the students say.
They explain that this evening they will present to their fellow citizens the “first tangible sprouts” of what follows after more than a year of their joint struggle.
“Society is a large and sluggish ship, and in the previous period citizens entrusted us with steering it in the right direction. In a short time, we have gone from being ordinary students to actors participating in important social processes. Such trust implies an obligation to behave responsibly. On the first day, we started with one word – Responsibility. It is the first among equals – a word that brought together such a large number of citizens with an inexhaustible desire to achieve progress toward a healthier society, freedom, and the rule of law.”
Plan and program
They add that they are aware that changes in society do not happen suddenly or easily.
“That is precisely why we believe it is important to talk about the process, and not only the final goal. Therefore, this evening at the protest we will slightly tilt the helm and present to our fellow citizens some of the basic principles and mechanisms for achieving accountability. At the very end, we will inevitably look back at the further course of action, as well as some other important events that await us in the somewhat nearer future,” they state.
According to them, a plan and program for the protest have been prepared, and the main focus will be on the speakers.
“For now, we cannot reveal the names of the speakers, but we can say that the protest is conceived around speeches; they are the main event. Alongside student speakers, we will also bring in experts who will explain and bring our mechanisms closer to the people,” they say.
They are calling on the residents of Novi Sad to come in as large numbers as possible, and they will make an effort to provide heaters to somewhat reduce the cold.
“Based on local talk, we can conclude that the people of Novi Sad can hardly wait to take to the streets again and support us. The protest will not last long, both because of the concept itself and the weather conditions, but it will be an introduction to a new phase of the struggle; there we will, of course, announce further actions that you can expect,” they announce.
