The Serbian diaspora, along with a group of students from Niš, set off on foot for Brussels this morning from the German city of Aachen.
At the tri-border area of Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands, about ten people from the diaspora and sixty students from Serbia, mostly from Niš, but also some from Novi Sad, gathered, Dojče vele journalist Srećko Matić tells N1.
He adds that their idea is to meet the ultramarathon runners there, who have already been running towards Brussels from Serbia for 15 days. With this action, they want to pay tribute to them, show solidarity, and simply say that they are with them and support them in their endeavor.
They arrived in Aachen yesterday by bus and are embarking on a journey totaling 136 kilometers.

Today’s first leg takes them from Aachen to Maastricht in the Netherlands, and on this very day, Europe Day, May 9th, this journey also has a symbolic dimension.
As Matić recalls, Aachen was the residence of Charlemagne, the king considered the founder of Europe. All his reforms in terms of politics, culture, and economy were the foundation for the creation of what is called European identity. They are heading to Maastricht, which also has historical significance for the European Union. It was there, in 1992, that the Maastricht Treaty was signed, which de facto laid the foundations for the European Union in its current form.

And today marks Europe Day because in 1950, Robert Schuman, then the French Foreign Minister, initiated the formation of the European Coal and Steel Community, which was actually the first version of the European Community.
Matić assesses that all this symbolism is in a way a message to the students who will embark on this journey to support the very European values they are fighting for, both here on the road and at home in Serbia.
