The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MUP), the High-Tech Crime Suppression Service of the Directorate for Technology, today warned citizens about the emergence of a new form of online fraud that abuses the WhatsApp application.
“The fraud is most often carried out by citizens receiving messages that appear to have been sent by a known person, with content such as ‘I found a link with your photo,’ ‘vote by clicking the link,’ or ‘look at this, you are in the photo,’ with an attachment or an internet link. By clicking on such a link, citizens are led to follow further instructions, thereby unknowingly enabling unauthorized persons to gain access to their WhatsApp account,” the MUP stated.
After that, attackers can read messages, send messages on behalf of the victim, and continue spreading the fraud to other contacts.
The MUP appealed to citizens to “not open suspicious links, even if they come from known contacts, not enter codes or follow instructions from untrusted websites, to regularly check whether there are unknown ‘linked devices’ on their WhatsApp account, and to immediately remove any device they do not recognize.”
The High-Tech Crime Suppression Service continues to monitor this type of abuse and calls on citizens to report any attempted fraud to the competent authorities.
Security in the digital environment also depends on the caution of each individual, the statement warned.
