A liturgy and memorial service for the Vidovdan martyrs were also served in the Orthodox chapel of the Vidovdan Heroes, at the cemetery of the Holy Archangels George and Gabriel in Sarajevo. Afterwards, wreaths were laid on the grave of Gavrilo Princip and other members of Young Bosnia.
The memorial service in the chapel of the Vidovdan Heroes is part of the event “Princip Days”. The liturgy and prayer commemoration were attended by a small number of Serbs, representatives of the Embassy of Serbia, as well as the mayor of Istočno Sarajevo, Ljubiša Ćosić.
On Vidovdan every year in Sarajevo, tribute is paid to Gavrilo Princip and the members of Young Bosnia, who gave their lives for the freedom of the Serbian and other South Slavic peoples. Today, Serbs are looking towards Republika Srpska, preserving their deed.
History was ruthless to the Serbs. After the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, Serbian shops in Sarajevo were plundered. Austria-Hungary launched an invasion of Serbia, World War I began.
The memorial plaque placed at the spot from where Princip shot was taken by the German-Ustaše authorities in 1941 as a gift to Adolf Hitler.
“Today, all of us who stand in this place stand on the right side of history. Those who try to show Gavrilo Princip and the members of Young Bosnia in a different light will never succeed in that,” said the mayor of Istočno Sarajevo, Ljubiša Ćosić.
Since 1939, the bones of the Young Bosnia martyrs have rested in the chapel, built from the tombstones of Serbs who were buried for centuries at the Marijin Dvor cemetery in Sarajevo.
There were no representatives of the Sarajevo authorities at the memorial service in the Vidovdan chapel. For them and most of the Bosniak public, Gavrilo Princip and the members of Young Bosnia are terrorists, but that is why those same authorities made a decision at the beginning of the year to return the monument to Franz Ferdinand.
That is the difference in understanding the past and comprehending the future.
