American senator Cory Booker broke the record for the longest speech ever held in the Senate. The marathon address by the Democrat from New Jersey was a symbolic protest against President Donald Trump. He warned of a “serious and urgent” moment in American history, and finished his speech after 25 hours and four minutes.
The speech began on Monday evening and ended on Tuesday evening, surpassing the previous record of Senator Strom Thurmond from 1957, who spoke for 24 hours and 18 minutes, writes “CBS News”.
In his address, Booker read letters from citizens affected by Trump’s policies, criticizing the administration for trade conflicts, layoffs, deportations, and threats to health programs like Medicaid.
Booker, who is African American, spoke about his roots as a descendant of both slaves and slave owners.
“I am here because however powerful it may be, the people are more powerful,” he said.
Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer congratulated Booker on his achievement, emphasizing that “America is proud of him”. Booker emphasized the power of the people in the fight for justice at the end of his speech.
