Dušan Radojčić (10) from Pančevo has been walking long distances since the age of eight to help those in need. The boy looks up to his father, Slavko (49), founder of the association “Ognjište.”
According to his father, Dušan is well known for going on pilgrimages to raise funds for the treatment of sick children.
“Even at five years old, he wanted to help. He watched what I was doing, and when he saw me preparing New Year’s packages for children in need, he would bring me his own toys to donate,” Slavko Radojčić told Euronews Serbia.
He noted that Dušan has walked with him two or three times, including once from Studenica Monastery to the hermitage of Saint Sava—a challenging feat even for an adult, let alone a child.
“It doesn’t matter how many kilometers he walked; what matters is his intention and desire to help others. Even if he walked only 100 meters with the goal of helping, that is significant,” he added.
Dušan is now an excellent fourth-grade student, attends music school, and also trains in basketball.
In addition to walking, the boy has helped his father prepare and deliver donations to places such as the Monastery of Saint Petka Izvorska and the Institute for Oncology and Radiology.
The media have called Dušan the youngest humanitarian, following in the footsteps of his father Slavko, who founded the “Ognjište” association in 2019.
“It all started with a sad story from Smederevska Palanka. I posted on social media to help one child. After that, friends contacted me saying I should organize something so everyone could contribute,” he said.
He added that their first pilgrimage was organized for a girl suffering from spinal muscular atrophy. He and a friend walked about 100 kilometers on foot over 20 hours.
“It was demanding for us because we are employed and work in shifts. We walked from Pančevo to Nimnik Monastery. That’s how it all began,” he told the portal.
Slavko emphasized that he wanted to set an example showing that people should help others. Dušan has also ridden a bicycle to Hilandar Monastery, and he has gone on about ten pilgrimages.
“I must stress that it’s difficult to organize this because I am employed, and I can only go on pilgrimages during my vacation,” he said.
He highlighted that these efforts would not be possible without the full support of his wife, Slavka.
“Harmony and understanding in the family are essential to make all of this possible,” Slavko Radojčić concluded in an interview with Euronews Serbia.
