The Government of the Republic of Serbia adopted at today’s session a Proposal for a Law on Declaring the Autonomous Province of Kosovo and Metohija a Special Social Protection Area, the institution announced in a press release.
According to the proposal, this law regulates the rights to special social protection, as well as the conditions, jurisdiction, and procedure for exercising those rights, in order to prevent the emergence of social exclusion in that area and to eliminate its consequences.
By declaring Kosovo and Metohija a special social protection area, the Government’s announcement states, financial support is provided to the legally defined categories of the population, with the aim of ensuring their survival in that territory and encouraging the preservation of cultural and historical heritage, with an emphasis on demographic, economic, and cultural development.
The goal of adopting these legal solutions is to support the unemployed, i.e. those over 65 who have not acquired the right to a pension, in order to provide them with financial support for a productive life and eliminate the consequences of social exclusion, the Government of the Republic of Serbia states.

The members of the Government adopted, as stated, the Proposal for a Law on the Organization and Jurisdiction of Judicial Authorities in the Prosecution of Criminal Offenses Committed in the Territory of the Autonomous Province of Kosovo and Metohija.
The proposed law provides for adequate mechanisms for connecting judicial authorities and concentrating expert knowledge that would, depending on each specific case, provide strong support to the public prosecutor’s office not only for conducting investigations, i.e. collecting evidence for the filing of an indictment, but also further during the court proceedings, until the final judgment, the institution announced.
Also, as stated, the proposed law enables the specialization of courts that adjudicate cases of criminal offenses committed in the territory of Kosovo and Metohija and the concentration of their jurisdiction so that trials in these criminal proceedings are more efficient and gain importance.
The new legal solutions stipulate that the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Higher Court in Belgrade are competent to act in first-instance cases of criminal offenses, and the Appellate Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Appellate Court in Belgrade are competent to act in second-instance cases. It was also envisaged that a Special Department for the Prosecution of Criminal Offenses Committed in the Territory of Kosovo and Metohija would be established within the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Belgrade, as stated.
