The Denver basketball players managed late last night our time to defeat San Antonio on their home court after overtime (136:134) with another great performance by Nikola Jokić, who achieved a double-double.
Jokić managed to score as many as 40 points along with 13 assists and eight rebounds, and Denver coach David Adelman was expectedly very proud of the Serbian basketball player. However, he pointed out that he is primarily satisfied with the victory and that there should be no relaxation.
– We played against a team at a high level. I think this was one of those games where we stayed together mentally, even when the rival was pulling away and making runs. I know that pessimism is everywhere, but I would like to say this – I would pay to watch these two teams fight, they have a great coach, the talented Wemby, and then on the other side with us, you have what you have. This is an emotional victory for the guys, great, just as it was in Utah. I think everyone is missing the fact that all victories count the same. This one doesn’t count as six, but as one. We want to continue with the momentum. I am proud of the guys, we reached overtime and in the end stopped the rival on the way to victory.
Then the praise began for both Jokić and Victor Wembanyama.
– This is great for the sport, how they do it, it’s different, unique, phenomenal. That’s why I said everyone should buy tickets for a match like this. You will never see something like that in different generations, what both of them are doing. Jokić is big, but he looks like a playmaker next to Wemby. It’s great for basketball. This is a match for the fans, and not exactly for the coaches. Because no one can defend them.
And how much would Adelman actually pay to watch Jokić and Wembanyama every day?
– Ouh, I have to think about that… I would like to maintain the solid lifestyle I have, not return home and live with my family (laughs). I would really pay a lot, really.
Adelman adds that Wembanyama probably brings out the best in Jokić as well.
– Yes, yes, I think both of them have that. You need to be a professional in every match, but they knew that they are currently two of the best players. We talked a lot about it, there’s no need to say what they did at the Olympic Games. What they are doing for the basketball world, not just for the NBA… It’s truly fun to watch players who can assist. Wemby managed to add some passes that only he can, you see for yourself what Jokić does every night. They lift each other up. Just like it was with Embiid before. Even what Jokić was hitting tonight is incredible, and then the blocks by Wemby. You don’t see that every day.
He points out that he has never seen anyone hit floaters like Nikola Jokić does.
– Yes, yes, especially after the match ends. It’s incredible, I’ve never seen anyone hit floaters like Nikola. The more someone defends him, the better. It goes through the net like a drop. That comes from hard work. He does that constantly in training, what a player he is. It’s like I’ve been watching Jokić and the guards all these years…
