Minister of Internal Affairs Ivica Dačić announced today on Instagram what his awakening and removal from a ventilator looked like after five days without consciousness, stressing that his recovery began with his favorite songs.

As he stated, he does not remember the events from the night of February 25 until the morning of March 2, but doctors and a nurse described to him how his awakening unfolded.

“The decision to stop the machine and remove me from the ventilator is very difficult and important, because you never know whether it will be a return to life or a departure into death. That is why the doctors decided to begin the process in the night between March 1 and 2, around one o’clock after midnight. They concluded that, since I responded well even in an unconscious state to music being played, they would carry out the process in that way. My awakening began with the song ‘Romanija’ by Halid Bešlić, ‘Moscow Nights,’ and ‘Prepelica’ by Baja Mali Knindža. I remember none of that; I only remember opening my eyes around half past three in the morning,” Dačić wrote.

According to him, he kept asking the medical staff to repeat what had happened because everything seemed unbelievable to him.

“But after the Last Judgment I survived and God’s decision that my time had not yet come, it was music that brought me back to life—Halid and ‘Romanija,’ ‘Moscow Nights,’ and Baja’s ‘Prepelica.’ That’s exactly me. And when I feel like crying, I sing even louder—song is my destiny! I wish you all the best, wonderful people! Let’s move on!”, the Minister of Internal Affairs wrote.

Dačić was hospitalized on February 25 at the Pulmonology Clinic of the Clinical Center of Serbia due to bilateral pneumonia. He was on a ventilator until March 2, and on March 5 he was moved from intensive care to a ward.

The minister was discharged from the hospital on March 9 and sent home for further recovery.
