Regarding the announcement that the United States might impose sanctions on the Serbian Petroleum Industry (NIS), the US embassy in Serbia could not comment on the news, but emphasized that the risks of cooperating with Russian companies, especially in the energy sector, have been known for a long time.
In response to the “Nedelja sa Subotićem” show on Euronews Serbia, the US embassy emphasized that NIS is a national resource for Serbia, but that Russian owners use part of the profits to finance the aggression against Ukraine.

“NIS is a valuable national resource for Serbia that was worth more than two billion dollars in 2008 when Gazprom bought more than half of its shares for a small fraction of their market value. Now it is the most profitable company in Serbia. The Russian owners of NIS are using part of their profits to finance the brutal aggression against Ukraine and undermine stability in the Balkans and across Europe, rather than investing in Serbia’s future,” the US embassy stated in its response to Euronews Serbia.
They emphasize that a change of ownership in NIS would certainly bring more peace and prosperity, both here and in the region.
They remain, they say, committed to partnering with Serbia to diversify its energy sources and establish energy independence in a way that benefits Serbia, not an aggressive and destabilizing external force.
After the information that the US will impose sanctions on the Serbian Petroleum Industry from January 1, this company announced that it is monitoring the current situation and analyzing all possible scenarios. NIS emphasizes that the supply of gas stations is currently regular and that the Pancevo Refinery is operating in normal mode. Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said a few days ago that he must wait for an official document, and then he will try to talk to the US administration.
