The US federal state of Illinois today filed a lawsuit to prevent US President Donald Trump from deploying hundreds of National Guard members to the streets of Chicago.

The lawsuit came just hours after a federal judge in Oregon temporarily blocked the Trump administration’s attempt to deploy National Guard troops for police duties in Portland, Reuters reports.

“These moves in President Trump’s long-announced war against Chicago and Illinois are illegal and dangerous,” the lawsuit states.

The deployment of troops in Illinois is the latest example of the expanding use of the US military in Trump’s second term. He previously ordered the deployment of the military along the US border, as well as the liquidation of suspected drug smugglers from Venezuela who were attempting to transfer narcotics to America.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding the Illinois lawsuit.
