A student of the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade, who was arrested on a city bus, was heard today in the Palace of Justice, and as she herself said, she was released to defend herself from freedom.

At 1 p.m., a rally was organized in front of the Palace of Justice in support of the student Teodora Gardović, who was detained on Tuesday while on a city bus in Belgrade.

Sometime after 2 p.m., Teodora left the Palace of Justice accompanied by the police and announced to the gathered citizens and colleagues who had come to support her that she had been released to defend herself from freedom and that only a misdemeanor charge had been filed against her.

“They arrested me on bus 511 on my way to Sremčica. When we arrived at ’29. novembar’, they told me I would be held overnight, but they didn’t tell me exactly why. Later, I was told that it had to do with the smashing of the SNS premises on Cvijićeva Street. I didn’t throw rocks and firecrackers, but I guess there weren’t enough women arrested,” she said.

Teodora also says that they treated her decently. “I got three meals and toilet paper; the only thing is they didn’t turn off the lights while sleeping. I was then transferred to the Palace of Justice; the prosecutor was decent, and I got a misdemeanor charge for vandalizing the SNS premises, only I didn’t use any tools; it was a bottle of water,” she stated.

She also said that it was the first time in her life that she had been detained. “It was my turn… my mom and dad are OK, we have experienced intimidation before, but it will not stop us from fighting on. It’s over, people,” Teodora said.

“It is not known what the misdemeanor charge will relate to”

Teodora’s lawyer, Rastko Naumov, says that it is not known what the misdemeanor charge will relate to.

“Teodora was arrested in a spectacular action; she was pulled out of bus 511 in front of her house. The criminal charge was for violent behavior at a sporting event or public gathering. Everything was pompous; she spent the night in ’29. novembar,’ was questioned, and the judge found no reason to order detention or custody,” Naumov said.

As he said, they were told that they would forward the evidence to the Misdemeanor Court.

“We will find out what the offense will be,” he said.

When asked why the arrest on the city bus was so spectacular, Naumov says it was an attempt to intimidate people.

“Maybe my colleague Aleksandar Petrović described it best the other night – as the end of this regime approaches, the repression is getting stronger and stronger; they are trying to intimidate people in every way, primarily younger people, so I think they are slowly losing control, they don’t even know what they should be doing, but they are trying to scare people so they go out on the streets as little as possible,” Naumov assessed.
