We are witnesses to many ugly things in Serbian sports, but what happened on Tuesday evening to young kayakers and their coach in Pančevo on the Tamiš River is something beyond comprehension.
A few minutes before the end of a training session for the Pančevo Canoe Kayak Club, a man on a scooter, for reasons unknown, ran into a group of children aged between six and nine. He approached them closely and, due to high speed, created a wave that threw the children from their boat into the water.
Coach Nenad Miković stood on a board, trying to protect the children, but the man on the scooter, who was later identified as being 29 years old, repeatedly drove the scooter toward Miković until he knocked him into the water. After doing so, he did not stop but continued with his aggressive behavior, as evidenced by a phone video.
Fortunately, no one was killed. The six children and their coach sustained minor physical injuries. The attacker was later taken into police custody, where he was ordered to be held for 48 hours.
The leaders of the Pančevo Kayak Club also had a sleepless night. Late into the night, club president Predrag Basarić, secretary Aleksandar Baralić, the aforementioned coach Miković, and the parents of the attacked children were all at the police station.
