US and Russian Presidents, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, met in Alaska, where a historic summit is being held at the Elmendorf-Richardson military base in Anchorage to, among other things, discuss an end to the war in Ukraine.
After arriving at the US military base, the two leaders participated in a ceremonial greeting on the red carpet, posing for photographers without answering questions from journalists, before getting into the same vehicle and heading for negotiations. A flyover of US aircraft was also recorded, including fighter jets and what appeared to be a B-2 stealth bomber, which roared over them. Putin did not respond when journalists shouted questions at him and Trump at the airport, asking if he would agree to a ceasefire. When asked, “will you stop killing civilians?” Putin seemingly gestured that he couldn’t hear the question.
IN THE SAME LIMOUSINE
Russian state media highlighted that Putin avoided his Aurus limousine to ride with Trump in his armored car. They emphasize that he did this at Trump’s invitation. “Russia 24” noted that this is a signal that “talks between the leaders have already begun,” adding that Trump was “extremely friendly towards Putin,” and even welcomed him with applause.
Although they sat together in the American presidential limousine (and the media did not fail to compare their planes) and exchanged a few sentences, plans for a private meeting between Putin and Trump were changed to include advisors, according to announcements from the White House.
Initially, it was announced that only the two of them would be at the meeting, but now it has been announced that it will be a “three-on-three” meeting, with Trump being joined by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Special Envoy for the Middle East Steve Witkoff. Putin is accompanied by Foreign Policy Advisor Yuri Ushakov and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, as confirmed by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
Rubio and Witkoff, as well as Treasury Secretary Scott Besent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, will also be present at the lunch after the meeting. Trump told reporters that his goal is to bring Putin back to the negotiating table, not to mediate an agreement on behalf of Ukraine. He also backed away from his promise of security guarantees to Kyiv as part of an agreement to end the war.
TRUMP WILL “WALK AWAY”
The talks are not limited to Ukraine and economic issues, according to the chief Russian negotiator, Kirill Dmitriev. A source told the Russian news agency TASS that the two leaders would touch upon the topic of global strategic security. Trump said that if the summit with Putin goes poorly, he would “walk away.” Both men posed with their associates in front of a backdrop that read “Alaska 2025” and “Pursuing Peace.” Neither answered questions from the media.
PUTIN WAS SILENT ON QUESTIONS ABOUT A CEASEFIRE
Putin did not answer journalists’ questions about the war in Ukraine while he was waiting for the meeting with Trump and his associates to begin. The media speculates that at one point, he made a confused expression as numerous journalists began shouting questions. They asked if he would agree to a ceasefire, if he would commit to not killing more civilians, and why Trump should trust his word now. He was then seen saying something and speaking loudly in the direction of the journalists, but it is not clear what he said, CNN writes. A press conference was announced to take place after the summit.
REACTION FROM EUROPE
A European official told CNN that it was a relief that Trump and Putin were not meeting one-on-one. “That is probably an encouraging development,” the official said.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that there were “no signals” that Russia would end the war, pointing to numerous attacks in Ukrainian cities today.
Lavrov, however, was confident that US sanctions would be eased after the summit. Negotiations and the meeting are expected to last for several hours, with Trump himself estimating it would be around five to six hours.
