Rodoljub Šabić, a lawyer and member of the Council of the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Media (REM), said that certain REM members had once again voted against initiating investigative proceedings against all 13 media outlets targeted by documented and substantiated complaints.
In a written statement, he said that REM Council President Stevica Smederevac had scheduled an “electronic session away from the public eye” for Friday, October 16, with 13 proposals on the agenda to initiate investigative proceedings against media outlets suspected of violating the standards established by the Law on Electronic Media.
“Once again, government representatives voted against initiating investigative proceedings against all 13 media outlets — every single outlet against which documented and substantiated complaints had been filed. Unfortunately, this is nothing unusual; it has become the norm when it comes to media outlets that broadcast strongly pro-government content,” Rodoljub Šabić said.
He assessed that they had “once again confirmed their complete unwillingness” to contribute to REM’s independent functioning or to uphold the standards established by the Law.
“They voted against the opinion issued by the Monitoring and Analysis Service”
“Government representatives also voted against all the findings of their own expert service at REM. They voted against the opinion issued by the Monitoring and Analysis Service, which, following an analysis of the disputed broadcast material, had provided substantiated reasons for recommending the initiation of investigative proceedings,” he said.
According to him, in every case in which the service identified violations of the law and regulations and recommended initiating investigative proceedings, not a single member of the Council representing the government voted in favor.
“Regardless of what or who stands behind this vote, such an arrogant, generally dismissive and contemptuous attitude toward the views not only of other Council members but also of the expert service, whose primary task is to analyze and assess broadcast content, is a disgrace and a case most likely without precedent on an international or global scale,” the statement reads.
