The German army is establishing a new division for homeland defense. In light of the increasingly pronounced security challenges, the Bundeswehr is forming a special unit tasked with guarding key infrastructure and military facilities within the country.
Germany is strengthening its defense capabilities in light of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius ordered the reorganization of the Bundeswehr to establish a unified operational command. The new division, which will number over 6,000 people, will be responsible for protecting vital points such as:
- Ports
- Railway stations
- Bridges
- Digital infrastructure
This change represents the fourth restructuring regulation for the Bundeswehr in its history, focusing on national and allied defense. The division will consist of active soldiers and reservists, making it semi-active and placing it under the command of the army.

The Bundeswehr explains that the new division will be responsible for protecting key points and infrastructure, but also for providing administrative assistance in the event of major disasters, terrorist attacks, or future pandemics. It will also play a key role in defending national and allied assets in times of crisis or conflict.
– The division will lead its own and, if necessary, other troops as part of the national territorial defense, in case of assistance, in civil-military cooperation, and in carrying out joint tasks of the Bundeswehr on the territory – said a spokesman for the army.
