The United Arab Emirates could assume a more combative role if Iran continues to launch missiles and drones at this Gulf Arab country, Minister of State for International Cooperation Reem Al Hashimy told CNN.

“We are ready (to defend ourselves). We hope it will not come to that, but… we will not sit idly by while we continue to be the target of this series of attacks,” Al Hashimy said in an interview with CNN’s Becky Anderson.

Asked whether the UAE could move to a more combative role, the senior official replied: “If it has to come to that, it will.”

“The ball is currently in Iran’s court regarding how they wish to behave toward the neighborhood and a neighbor that has traditionally been very fair and good to them,” she added.

Iran fired at least 137 ballistic missiles and 209 drones at the UAE, the UAE Ministry of Defense announced on Saturday evening, adding that the vast majority were intercepted, with the exception of 14 drones that struck targets.

Iran launched an unprecedented attack with missiles and drones targeting the UAE capital, Abu Dhabi, as well as the economic and tourist hub, Dubai.

“We have one of the best air and missile defense systems in the world and we are doing everything to ensure safety and security,” Al Hashimy said. “We are in a safe place that has very strong infrastructure… we will truly turn over every stone to ensure that remains the case for all our citizens and residents.”
