Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner has been suspended for three months due to a case involving Clostebol, a substance he tested positive for in March 2024 (with a concentration of less than one billionth of a gram per liter).
An agreement was reached between the ATP world number one and WADA. The sanction began on February 9 and will last until May 9, with the most important news for Italians being that he will be able to play at the Masters 1000 in Rome.
WADA accepted that Sinner did not intend to cheat and that Clostebol, the banned substance he tested positive for, did not provide a significant advantage over other competitors, and that the incident occurred without his knowledge, due to negligence from his team members.
- However, according to the code and based on CAS precedents, the athlete is responsible for the negligence of their entourage. Given the unique set of facts in this case, a three-month suspension is considered an appropriate outcome – the statement read.
WADA highlighted that Sinner accepted the punishment and will be able to return to training on April 13.
After defending his title at the Australian Open, Sinner remains firmly atop the ATP rankings with more than 3,500 points ahead of second-ranked Alexander Zverev.
The 23-year-old Italian has been exceptionally dominant recently, with 2024 being the most successful year of his career by far.
Sinner has won eight titles, including two Grand Slams (Australian Open and US Open), three Masters titles (Miami, Cincinnati, and Shanghai), and the ATP Finals in Turin.
