While most of our people who want to try their luck abroad move to Germany and Austria, one Serb, Božidar Perović, has found his peace on the remote island of Kodiak, which belongs to the US state of Alaska, and which a large number of people have not even heard of.
He works there in a fish processing plant, and his daily wage, he says, is from 180 to 200 dollars.
- Kodiak is paradise on earth – Božidar begins his story on his Tik Tok account “calac.digitalac”.
Life Among Salmon and Blast Freezers
Božidar currently works in a salmon processing plant, one of many in Kodiak, a small fishing town in southwest Alaska. The work is simple but requires endurance and discipline. In the factory, different types of salmon are processed—heads are cut, guts are removed, fish are filleted by hand or with machines, packed in special containers, and then sent to huge “blast” freezers.
Those who work in the “Case App” sector are in charge of frozen fillets. The work is constant, but Božidar does not see it as difficult.
- I work twelves, that is, 12 hours. However, 12 hours pass incredibly quickly. The first three days might be hard, but when you get into the swing of things, it’s easy – he explains on his profile.
Earns up to 200 dollars a day
Although his workday lasts 12 hours, he is paid for 11 and a half hours.
- I won’t bore you with taxes and deductions, but daily it’s from 180 to 200 dollars. Do the math yourself – he says with a smile.
He will work, he says, continuously for 2.5 months without a break. Eventually, if it gets too difficult for him, he might take a day off. That means he will earn about 15,000 dollars in two and a half months.
Manual Labor, But the Brain Doesn’t Rest
Although he works a job he describes as “manual,” Božidar doesn’t let his brain go dull. He is aware that such jobs can be mentally exhausting, so he finds ways to stay mentally active and motivated. While working, he says he listens to music for nine hours and is culturally elevated for three hours.
- I listen to audiobooks in English. Cultural elevation is a must in any case, even in this backwater – he says.
The city of Kodiak, which has only a few thousand inhabitants, has delighted Božidar with its beauty and tranquility.
- There’s a cafe, there are beautiful destinations, you have places to walk. It’s civilized. Even here, in this backwater, you can live well – he claims.
Although the working conditions are far from perfect—constant humidity, cold, protective suits that are not taken off—Božidar says you can get used to everything, and the benefits that come with this job make it worthwhile.
