Colombian professor Miguel Ángel Beltrán Villegas has been detained in Belgrade. Beltrán, as a Colombian academic dedicated to critical thinking, was invited to participate in the 58th Congress of Americanists in Novi Sad.
News of his arrest was published by a user of the social network X.

On this occasion, the J.A. Fraiter Association also spoke out, publishing Professor Beltrán’s testimony about everything he went through in Serbia.

“Today, June 29, 2025, Professor Miguel Ángel Beltrán Villegas from the National University of Colombia and Professor Natalia Caruso from the National Pedagogical University, along with their two minor children, were victims of arbitrary detention without guarantees at Belgrade airport,” announced the J.A. Fraiter Association.

In the video, Professor Beltrán decisively condemns that the Serbian authorities unjustly accused him of terrorism, without any legal process, in an act of criminalization and political persecution.
The J.A. Fraiter Association demands that international human rights organizations immediately intervene to guarantee his safety and respect for his fundamental rights.

Professor Beltrán is, by the way, one of the professors who opposed the previous regime in Colombia, supported student rebellions, and therefore suffered severe consequences in his country.
And regarding the arrest of Professor Beltrán, the President of Colombia sent a protest note.
