Ivana Španović is a treasure of Serbian athletics; at 35 years old, she won gold and conquered the entire Balkans in the triple jump!
This weekend, the Balkan Athletics Championship is being held in Volos, Greece, where Serbia had a total of 27 opportunities to win medals, counting the number of athletes and disciplines in which we have representatives. Ivana Španović delighted us on the first evening with a gold medal in the triple jump, which is her second discipline besides the long jump.
In her secondary discipline, she reached first place with a brilliant jump in the last, sixth series, even though her rivals had overtaken her shortly before. Her winning result was 14.12 meters, which was enough in good competition.
True drama was seen at the very end, as the legendary Serbian athlete from Zrenjanin first fell to fourth position in the last series and could very easily have been left without a medal. However, that did not happen, and Ivana Španović showed class when it was most needed.
Her other two best attempts were 13.89 and 13.88 meters, which shows that she is slowly gaining form before the most important event and goal, which is the World Championship in Tokyo. She is also expected to compete in Volos on Sunday in the long jump, her sure discipline for the trip to Japan.
Elena Andea Talos from Romania won silver with 14.10, while Greek Oksana Koreneva was in third place with 14.00. Neja Filipič from Slovenia remained without a medal with 13.96.
After winning bronze last weekend at the European U23 Championships, Aleksandra Mitrović now took eighth place in the same final at the Balkan Championship with a result of 13.52 meters.
