The Mayor of North Mitrovica, Milan Radojević, stated today that he has received a summons to appear before a court after a criminal complaint was filed against him for displaying a banner reading “Peace of God, Christ is Born” during the celebration of Christmas in January this year.

Radojević told media in Mitrovica, as reported by Radio-televizija Srbije (RTS), that in his capacity as municipal president he made the decision for a banner with a “peaceful message” to be placed on Christmas Eve, January 6, which police officers initially confiscated and then returned.

“Because of that banner, I received a court summons to appear in court, which I will of course do as a responsible citizen and mayor of the municipality I lead,” he said, adding that this is just one of the forms of pressure that Serbs in Kosovo and Metohija are enduring.

He stated that it is unclear to him on what grounds a criminal complaint was filed against him, and that it remains to be seen which article of the law and which criminal offense it refers to, assessing that it represents pressure on the new municipal leadership.

“But what is a fact is that this is a form of pressure on the municipal leadership, where the police want to interfere absolutely in the work of the municipality, which is unacceptable. The municipality has its own competences delegated from the central level, the police have their competences. I believe, like the majority of citizens of this city, that the Kosovo police have smarter things to do than monitor how banners are placed and what is written on them,” Radojević said.

Speaking about the law on foreigners and vehicles that comes into force on March 15, he said that the leadership of the presidency of the Serb List is in daily contact with representatives of the international community, pointing out “the seriousness of this problem,” as he claims that several thousand people will be affected once the law takes effect.

“Unfortunately, so far we have not received any feedback on what is happening with it. We have the same information as you, that there is some expert group, but that is the only information we have, we have heard it several times through the media. There is no communication with the central level on that issue,” Radojević stated.

When it comes to the positions of international representatives, Radojević says that they hear from them that they understand the seriousness of the problem, that they are working on it, and that this is all they are receiving at this moment.
