The Iranian Red Crescent (IRC) warned of the risk of toxic rain after explosions at oil facilities in Iran. The IRC warned civilians in a post on Telegram to take precautionary measures, stating that rain can become toxic after explosions at oil facilities.

It is emphasized that such rain can cause chemical skin burns and lung damage. The IRC gave instructions to citizens that after explosions at oil facilities they must under no circumstances leave their homes, and if they are outside, they should immediately take shelter under concrete or metal roofs and avoid taking shelter under trees.

Climatologist and professor at the Faculty of Geography in Belgrade Aleksandar Valjarević told Euronews Serbia that this is bad news and that the term toxic, acid rain has not been used for a long time.

“That means that the pH value must be below 5.5, that is between 4 and 4.5. You know that oil is a complex organic substance that contains sulfur and nitrogen. In this case, since bombing occurred, sulfur and nitrogen were released at higher ionic temperatures and formed sulfur oxide and sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide, which caused acidity and toxicity, so they can cause major consequences for plant and animal life as well as for humans. A very, very worrying and dangerous thing for me,” he said.

Valjarević also spoke about the consequences that bombing and the use of hypersonic missiles have on the climate.

“Supersonic missiles that travel even 18,000 km per hour, even Fatah 2, pass through the troposphere, the stratosphere, and the mesosphere, which are all parts of the atmosphere, and they heat up to temperatures above 5,000 degrees. This causes the appearance of interesting stratospheric clouds. When the number of these clouds increases, there are greater droughts, more pronounced climate extremes, whether through floods, strong winds, tornadoes, hurricanes. And unfortunately humans increasingly, due to modern technology, influence the atmosphere and therefore the climate. Because of these missiles I expect that we will also have heat waves in some territories where we did not have them, and where we had them even a few degrees higher temperatures,” he said.

When asked how residents exposed in those zones can protect themselves, Valjarević says that these are PM2.5 and PM10 particles and that it is then most important to have enough alcohol, iodine, and above all filtration masks.

“Even gas masks, depending on what the Iranian Civil Protection, that is the IRC, can provide to them. Then, if they do not have those masks, they should go outside with a damp cloth, wear dark glasses because those particles are dispersed even through the morning fog. I was in Tehran three years ago, truly a beautiful city, but with big problems such as lack of water and the large occurrence of fog which during the day was actually smog, that is polluted air, now the situation is even worse. They should not go out without urgent need, they should have filtration in their apartments, use inverter air conditioners if they exist. Now the other problem is electricity, so it is most important to lower the shutters and drink as many dairy products as possible. These are some preventive measures that are very similar to those after a nuclear catastrophe, I hope that Human Rights Watch and others will pay attention so that such incidents do not occur, because no war is good for any country, nor for humanity,” he said.

Black sky above Tehran

Let us recall, a professor at the University of Tehran Foad Izadi said on Sunday that around noon local time it looked like night, due to the smoke after explosions at oil facilities in that city.

At least four people were killed in Israeli attacks on Iranian oil facilities in Tehran and Alborz province, an Iranian official said. In the Israeli attacks, four oil depots and a center for the transfer of petroleum products in Tehran and Alborz were hit, Al Jazeera reported.

As Iranian authorities announced, despite the attack, “there is no shortage of fuel.” Among the dead are also two drivers of oil tankers.

Oil from the struck facilities leaked into part of Tehran’s sewage system, and in the capital of Iran “rivers of fire” flowed along the streets. A video published on the platform X shows a fire burning along part of a road in the city.
