The Brazilian woman recognized as the world’s oldest person, Inah Canabarro Lucas, has passed away at the remarkable age of 117.

She died at the Congregation of the Teresian Sisters in Porto Alegre, where she spent the final years of her life, BFM reports.

Inah became the world’s oldest person following the death of Japanese woman Tomiko Itoke in January, who also passed away at the full age of 116.

Canabarro Lucas was 116 years and 326 days old at the time of her death, the Congregation of the Teresian Sisters announced.

Lucas was born on June 8, 1908. She began her spiritual journey at the age of 16 when she entered the school of the Teresian Sisters, and at 26, she took her vows as a nun. Throughout her life, she served as a teacher and secretary. In 2018, at nearly 110 years old, she received the Apostolic Blessing from Pope Francis.

Lucas was the second oldest nun in history, after Frenchwoman Lucile Randon, who lived to be 118 years old.

Following Lucas’s death, the title of the world’s oldest living person now belongs to Englishwoman Ethel Caterham, who is currently 115 years and 252 days old, according to data from the Gerontology Research Group (GRG).
