The city of Čačak is known for many things, but it is becoming increasingly recognized for its heroic women. After Tatjana Obradović, who adopted a butterfly child, another woman has touched hearts with her extraordinary gesture. Anđelka Zagorčić has decided to donate the stem cells she had preserved for her daughter to someone in urgent need of them for recovery.
“We preserved stem cells 16 years ago when I gave birth to my fourth child, my son Novak. At the time, we intended to use them for the treatment of my daughter Jana, who has type 1 diabetes. Since medicine has not yet advanced enough to treat this disease with stem cells, we decided to give them to another child who can benefit from them,” Anđelka told RINA.
The story of a sick girl from Smederevo deeply moved the Zagorčić family, leading them to donate the preserved stem cells without hesitation. Jana, for whom the cells were originally stored, fully supported the decision.
“Perhaps the girl suffering from aplastic anemia won’t be a match, as several medical parameters must align. But that won’t stop us. We are open to exchanging the preserved stem cells for a compatible match, and if that’s not possible, we will donate them to another child who can be helped,” says this compassionate woman.
Their goal is to help a sick child in any way they can, as they understand the struggles firsthand.
“I often say that I am a wealthy woman—not in material things, but in what truly matters: my daughters and sons. However, I also know what it means to have a sick child. There is nothing harder, believe me. That’s why, as much as I can, I will strive to help another family in their fight for recovery and a better life,” Anđelka emphasizes.
Today, this Čačak native is also a grandmother. Her eldest son, Đorđe, is married to Olga, and they have a daughter, Milica. Jana, the girl for whom it all began, is now in her final year of university, Mihailo is working, and the youngest, Novak, is a first-year high school student.
