The whole world has heard about the Serbs from the town of Jackson in California and their traditional Christmas celebration, with gunfire and singing that can be heard and echoes far and wide, all the way to Serbia and the Balkans. We decided to be the first Serbian media outlet to join them in this celebration on the spot.
Our journey from San Francisco Airport led us through fertile Californian land, where everything you plant grows, so along the way one after another appear: vineyards, orchards, plowed fields…
And so, after two and a half hours of driving, you enter a town that in every way resembles other similar American towns, except for one thing: On every other house Serbian flags are flying, and on local shops, companies, and streets the owners’ names sound somehow familiar: Matić, Vuković, Živanović, and on the well-known bakery on the main street, there is a sign, in English:
“Sorry, we are closed until January 14, for the Serbian New Year!”
