The prices of pork rinds (čvarci), a favorite Croatian delicacy, are rising every year, and citizens are sending photos from the Zagreb market where a kilogram of this specialty has reached an astonishing €28.

Pork rinds are an indispensable part of Croatia’s gastronomic offer, and they are particularly valued in Slavonia, Baranja, and Međimurje, where most of them are produced. Preparation begins with melting pork fat and ends with the crispy pieces being pressed.
Special events, such as the Čvarkijada, are organized for this delicacy, where producers compete in the art of preparation and offer various versions of pork rinds.
Last year, the price reached €30 per kilogram in November, and the forecasts for this season are not at all optimistic. It is expected that the price of pork rinds could break even that threshold.
Increased consumption of pork, reduced production, and African Swine Fever, which has already affected numerous Slavonian farms and led to the euthanasia of thousands of pigs, are further pushing the prices up.
