Richard Grenell, the special representative of US President Donald Trump, assessed that the idea of mutual recognition of Serbia and Kosovo is “ridiculous”, and that politicians should strive for economic development, which happens “when people have jobs and don’t sit around and talk about politics”.
In an interview for Klan Kosova, he stated that Trump will “get involved in the Kosovo issue step by step”.
“I think we will go step by step. Of course, we are fully engaged on these issues, but as I said, we are working on economic development around the world. That is the focus,” said Grenell, as reported by KoSSev.
To a question from a Klan Kosova journalist whether there are plans for the USA to return to “old topics such as changing borders”, Grenell said that there is “no return to anything”.
“I think the plans have always been economic plans. There is no return to anything. We have always focused on economic development as a driver for solving problems and we will continue to do so,” said Grenell.
He added that the “people of Kosovo are an excellent partner of the United States of America”, adding that the damage from the currently strained relations between Washington and Pristina is primarily economic.
“We need a government that is ready for investments, not for politics. What I would say is that we have tried and there is too much politics. (The Government of Kosovo led by Albin Kurti) is not interested in doing the things that are necessary for economic growth. Not only American businessmen, but also Western businessmen say the same,” Grenell states.
According to him, while he was working on a final agreement between Kosovo and Serbia, he predicted that there would come a point where economic development would be so great that it would overcome politics and reach a point where NATO troops would leave Kosovo.
“I want the day to come when there will be no more NATO troops because when you have NATO troops protecting the country’s security, you are sending a message to the business community that it is not safe,” said Grenell.
