The Vice President of the Government and Minister of Internal Affairs Ivica Dačić stated that members of the Special Anti-Terrorist Unit (SAJ), with the cooperation of all other police forces, arrested Alija Balijagić this morning at around 3:05 AM in the village of Pribojska Goleša.

“He was found in a house that we had information he occasionally visits. He was caught while sleeping and did not resist. He had two rifles, a hunting rifle, a knife, and another weapon – a hunting carbine, modified from a military rifle,” Dačić said.

The arrest took place in a very difficult area with 40 centimeters of snow, as reported by the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MUP).

“The individual is being brought to the Police Directorate in Prijepolje,” Dačić added.

How did the search unfold?

Balijagić is suspected of murdering brother and sister Madžgalj on October 25 in the town of Stolac near Bijelo Polje. Since then, he had been hiding in the border region between Montenegro, Serbia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, in terrain that he was familiar with from previous times when he was also on the run.

Balijagić is a repeat offender, having spent almost four decades in prison for various criminal acts, including 15 years in solitary confinement.

An Interpol warrant had been issued for his arrest, and he was located in the vicinity of Prijepolje in early November. The police forces of both Montenegro and Serbia had been searching for him, with the involvement of the military, drones, and sniffer dogs.
