U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin conveyed concern to Israel regarding attacks on UN peacekeeping forces in Lebanon. Today, Austin expressed deep concern to Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant over reports that Israeli forces fired on positions of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). During a conversation with his Israeli counterpart, Austin appealed for the safety of the UNIFIL mission and the Lebanese army, the U.S. Department of Defense announced, as reported by Reuters.
In a joint statement yesterday, 34 countries contributing to the UNIFIL mission urged the protection of peacekeepers amid rising tensions in the Middle East region. The United Nations mission stated on Saturday that a fifth peacekeeper was injured after two Indonesian soldiers were wounded on Thursday by Israeli tank fire at a checkpoint in the UNIFIL main base in Nakura, while two members from Sri Lanka were injured on Friday, earlier reported by ANSA.
Meanwhile, CNN reports that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will hold a cabinet meeting today. The government meeting has been organized at a time when Israeli leaders are weighing what response to send following the Iranian rocket attack on their country carried out on October 1.
