Ahead of talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and a large delegation of European leaders, US President Donald Trump announced that he would convey a message to the White House visitors today that Zelensky must agree to some of Russia’s terms for the war in Ukraine to end, which include giving up Crimea and NATO membership.
“Ukrainian President Zelensky can end the war with Russia almost immediately, if he wants to, or he can continue to fight. Remember how it started. There is no return of Crimea that Obama gave away (12 years ago, without a single shot fired!), and no entry of Ukraine into NATO. Some things never change,” Trump wrote on social media, CNN reports.
In the message, Trump stated that today is a “big day”.
“We have never had so many European leaders at the same time. It is a great honor for me to host them,” Trump said.
The meeting with Trump in the White House was confirmed by the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, and the arrival of French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, as well as NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, is also expected.
European leaders who are coming to the White House with Zelensky today have previously expressed concern that the meeting will boil down to Trump pressuring the Ukrainian leader to accept the terms that Putin set during his meeting with Trump in Alaska on Friday, CNN reports.
