He slapped her, hit her head against the wall, then threatened to rape her in the garage of the Government of Serbia – a police officer. And not an ordinary one. According to her claims, the commander of the Unit for the Protection of Certain Persons and Objects, Marko Kričak, did this to the student Nikolina Sinđelić. N1’s interlocutors say that it is a man who is extremely loyal to President Aleksandar Vučić, under whose command the JZO, since the protests began, acts like a Praetorian guard.

Marko Kričak. That’s a name that, by all accounts, the student Nikolina Sinđelić will remember for as long as she lives. She will remember Thursday, August 14, when she was returning from a protest with a group of young people. Then, she recounts, un-uniformed men rushed out of the garage of the Government of Serbia, started beating them with batons, and then held them in that garage for hours. There she finds out that they were actually arrested by members of the police, a special unit of the JZO.

“Whore” – that’s how Commander Marko Kričak introduced himself to her.

“Marko Kričak slapped me and hit my head against the wall. He said he would undress me and rape me in front of everyone, that everyone would watch, I was visibly angry, he said ‘you should beg me to stop beating you’,” says the student Nikolina Sinđelić.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs announced that this girl’s words should not be believed, quickly, just after her guest appearance on N1 was over. They say – there was no use of coercive means, tying, insulting, or any kind of maltreatment. The Ministry of Internal Affairs adds that she was arrested because she was part of a group that threw flares and bottles at the police. The question is who should be believed in this story?

“She should be absolutely believed and she should be taken at her word because experience tells us that in such situations women should be absolutely believed. Given what has been coming out about this man for years, and especially since yesterday, we see that we are talking about a man who is prone to cruel, sadistic and abusive behavior. A person who is prone to such behavior knows very well that a woman’s fear of rape is almost equal to the fear of losing her life. Given his profile, Marko Kričak knows that very well,” says Jovana Gligorijević, a journalist for the weekly Vreme.

But what is Marko Kričak’s profile and who is he actually?

“Whenever we see Kričak on the street, we know there will be an incident. That man has obviously gotten carried away and imagined that he is some new Legija,” says Uglješa Bokić, a journalist for the Danas newspaper.

As the media reports, Marko Kričak was introduced to the world of security services by Bratislav Gašić, so Kričak first worked in the BIA, and when Gašić left the BIA and became the Minister of Internal Affairs, he appointed Kričak as the commander of the JZO in 2023. Our interlocutor, however, claims that the closeness to Gašić was not crucial for Kričak to go from selling luxury cars at the Belgrade Porsche representative office to the rank of police lieutenant colonel.

“We have information that Kričak came here thanks to his acquaintance with Zvonko Veselinović and that this acquaintance, along with a relationship of unusually high loyalty to the person of the President of the Republic himself, is what predominantly determines the career of this now police lieutenant colonel,” says Milan Radonjić, a journalist for the weekly “Radar.”

The Radar journalist is therefore convinced that Kričak is one of the president’s main loyalists. He supports this thesis with the speech of the JZO commander after the Vidovdan protest, which, he says, he obtained through sources.

“The president is watching us. We must justify the trust, the expectations of us are great…”, is part of the statement that is said to be Kričak’s.

“For such a controversial person to be at the head of a serious unit is a scandal for the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the police minister is primarily responsible for it, who allows such a person to lead such a unit,” says Bokić.

“We simply see the abuse of all institutions in these crisis moments, and certainly security institutions in the first place,” says Radonjić.

“That unit has no business on the streets, their basic task and their jobs are, as their name says, it is a unit for the protection of certain persons and objects,” says Bokić.

Among the objects they protect is certainly not the Faculty of Law, and it was there at the beginning of July that members of the JZO especially distinguished themselves, especially the deputy commander of Marko Kričak – Tanja Drobnjak, against whom the Kreni-promeni Movement filed a criminal complaint on suspicion of having committed the criminal offense of abuse and torture – of a female student whom the policewoman pulled by the hair in an attempt to force her to unlock her phone.
