During a conversation with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić invited Russian companies to actively participate in infrastructure projects in Serbia, specifically highlighting Rosatom and Russian Railways as desirable partners.

“I must tell all Russian companies that want to participate in infrastructure projects in Serbia—they are welcome, including Russian Railways, Rosatom, of course, and many others,” said Vučić during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Beijing.

This statement comes at a time when relations between the two countries are further intensifying, especially in the areas of energy and transport, and the possibility of the Russians building nuclear power plants in Serbia is being mentioned more and more often.

Rosatom has already offered nuclear power plant projects

As a reminder, cooperation between Serbia and Russia in the field of nuclear energy has already been announced on several occasions during 2025.

As reported on May 14 in the newspaper Izvestia, Maria Deurić, director of the representative office of the state corporation Rosatom in Serbia, stated at the Western Balkans Energy Transition Forum in Belgrade that Rosatom is ready to offer Serbia a whole range of solutions—from small-power nuclear plants based on RITM-200 reactors, to large power units of the 3+ generation.

“Our technologies have already proven their reliability and efficiency both in Russia and in international projects,” Deurić pointed out via Rosatom’s official Telegram channel.

She also added that the construction of a new nuclear power plant in Serbia would create long-term conditions for the country’s socio-economic prosperity, and that it would significantly strengthen its energy independence. The new power plant would represent a reliable, efficient, and clean energy source.

Rosatom’s director Aleksey Likhachev stated that Vučić’s visit to Moscow on May 9 marks the beginning of a new stage of cooperation between Russia and Serbia in the field of nuclear infrastructure development, the Interfax agency reported at the time.

In November 2024, Serbia lifted a decades-long moratorium on the use of nuclear energy, and in 2025, it has already formed expert commissions to assess the feasibility of building a nuclear power plant. The plans include an analysis of potential partners, which, besides Russia, also include France and China.
