This is, as the UN describes it, “the most authoritative conclusion to date” on Israel’s actions in the war that has been ongoing since October 7, 2023.
In the 72-page report, published on Tuesday, the commission established under the UN Human Rights Council determined that Israel committed “four acts of genocide” in the Gaza Strip.
These include killing Palestinians, causing “serious bodily and mental harm,” “deliberately inflicting living conditions calculated to bring about the physical destruction of the group in whole or in part,” as well as “imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group.”
Israel immediately rejected the accusations, emphasizing that its military campaign is conducted in self-defense and in accordance with international law.
“The State of Israel categorically rejects the distorted and false report and demands the immediate dissolution of this commission. This is a report entirely based on Hamas’s lies,” stated the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
They added that the members of the commission are “proxies of a terrorist organization whose horrific statements about Jews have been condemned worldwide.”
The Israeli army launched an offensive on Gaza after the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, in which about 1,200 people were killed and 251 taken hostage. Since then, according to the Hamas-controlled health ministry, at least 64,905 people, mostly civilians, have been killed in Israeli attacks.
More than 90 percent of residential buildings in Gaza are estimated to be damaged or destroyed, the health and sanitation systems have collapsed, and UN experts have already declared famine in Gaza City. The majority of the population has been displaced.
