U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he would like to reach an agreement with Iran on its nuclear program, arguing that such a deal would prevent Israel from bombing the country.

Speaking to the New York Post, Trump said it is in Iran’s interest to negotiate a deal regarding its nuclear program.

However, he declined to reveal details about any potential negotiations with Tehran.

“In a way, I don’t like telling you what I’m going to tell them. You know, that’s not nice,” Trump stated.

On Tuesday, he renewed his “maximum pressure” campaign on Iran, which includes efforts to reduce the country’s oil exports to zero in order to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

Return to Washington’s Tough Policy on Iran

Ahead of his meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump signed a presidential memorandum reinstating Washington’s hardline policy on Iran, similar to the approach taken during his first presidential term.

Trump told reporters that he is willing to meet with the Iranian president to try to convince Tehran to abandon its nuclear weapons development efforts.

According to Rafael Grossi, Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Iran is “dramatically” accelerating uranium enrichment to 60% purity, which is close to the 90% level required for nuclear weapons production. Grossi made these remarks to Reuters in December.

Iran denies that it seeks to develop nuclear weapons.
