A U.S. federal appeals court has temporarily halted a lower court decision that ordered the suspension of National Guard deployment on the streets of Washington.
The Court for the District of Columbia, where Washington is located, lifted the previous ban without ruling on the “merits” of the case, U.S. media reported.
This allows U.S. President Donald Trump to keep the troops he sent during the summer and further reinforced after the November 26 shooting in which two National Guard members were wounded near the White House.
District Judge Jia Cobb ruled last month that Trump’s deployment of the National Guard in the capital was unlawful because it interferes with the authority of local officials over policing, CBS News reported.
She concluded that the president may protect federal property, but cannot independently deploy the National Guard for crime control.

She delayed her decision for 21 days due to the appeal.
Instead of withdrawing the troops, Trump ordered the deployment of an additional 500 soldiers after the shooting of members of the West Virginia National Guard, which officials described as a “targeted attack.”
