After four decades of sadness, uncertainty, and longing, Mejrema Karišik from Novi Pazar finally embraced her son, Faruk, whom she had never had the chance to meet before. The poignant reunion of mother and son, separated for a full 40 years, took place last week in the village of Trnava, thanks to the great effort and engagement of humanitarian worker Hido Muratović, leaving a strong emotional impression on all those present and the many who followed this life story through the media.

Mejrema Karišik’s story first came to light just over two months ago, when a report was published about her decades-long search for a child who, she claims, was taken from her shortly after birth. Born and raised in Novi Pazar, Mejrema married young in Kosovo, where she gave birth to her son. However, just a few days after childbirth, for then-unknown reasons, she was forcibly separated from her child and expelled from the family home.

“For years, I lived with only one wish – to find out if my son was alive and to, at least once in my life, look him in the eyes,” Mejrema said in a statement to journalists, visibly shaken but filled with gratitude.

The search for Faruk was initiated thanks to the involvement of humanitarian worker Hido Muratović and his team. Through a network of contacts, fieldwork, and the help of good people, information was obtained that led to Faruk, now an adult man living abroad. When he heard about the circumstances of his birth and the identity of his mother, he decided to come to Sandžak without hesitation.

The emotional moment of the reunion was captured by cameraman Emir Smajović. The video shows Mejrema, in tears, reaching out to her son, saying: “My son… Dear Allah, am I dreaming?” Faruk, overcome with emotion, approaches his mother and whispers: “I looked for her for years. I didn’t know the truth. When I found out who I was – I knew I had to come. May she forgive me…”

This touching life story reminded the public of the importance of the fight for truth and justice, as well as the power of maternal love that knows no boundaries, time, or distance. The scenes of the mother and son’s reunion sparked a wave of empathy and support across the region.
