Ahmad Vahidi faces a difficult task. The new head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) had until now been responsible for exporting the Islamic revolution across the Middle East, but he now has an even more complicated task: to preserve the regime and prevent the country of 93 million people from sinking into civil war and mutual bloodshed, writes Telegraph.

Let us recall, the previous commander of the Guard, Mohammad Pakpour, was killed on the first day of the aggression by the US and Israel against Iran.

On one side he faces alleged conspiracies to overthrow the Islamic Republic supported by the American CIA, on the other there are Baloch militants in the southeast, and on the third dissatisfied Arabs in the southwest. Not to mention the constant air strikes by the US and Israel, so Tehran certainly needs a decisive and capable commander.

Sixty-seven-year-old Vahidi was appointed commander of the Quds Force, the external operational wing of the IRGC, in 1988, and played a key role in strengthening organizations such as Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Houthi movement in Yemen, Hamas in Gaza, as well as Iraqi and Syrian militias.

He knows which tribal leaders respond positively to co-optation and which to coercion. He understands proxy warfare and the way of managing non-Persian militias, and that knowledge will now be more useful to him than tactical genius.

The very fact that Vahidi has been appointed to such an important position is a sign that Tehran’s priority is to avoid civil war by maintaining control in ethnically sensitive regions and suppressing separatist activities.

Vahidi already warned about this, saying on Thursday that any “terrorist or separatist activity” would be “crushed in the cradle,” and threatened the “destruction” of anyone who attacks Iran.

“Enemies and misguided counterrevolutionary elements should know that if they commit evil against Iran, they will face complete destruction,” said the IRGC spokesperson.

Ali Larijani, secretary of Iran’s National Security Council, also warned that any American ground invasion would result in “thousands killed and captured.”

“Some American officials have said they intend to enter Iran by land with several thousand soldiers,” Larijani said.

“The brave sons of Ruhollah Khomeini and Ali Khamenei are waiting to disgrace those evil American officials with several thousand dead and captured. The land of Iran is not a place for the devil’s dance.”

The IRGC Intelligence Organization also sent messages to millions of phones, warning that “any movement that disrupts security will be considered direct cooperation with the enemy.”

Vahidi’s instinct for survival

However, these are not just empty threats. Vahidi is no stranger to the use of force. During the mass protests in 2022, when Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli defended the security forces who shot protesters in the head, saying that “they also shot at the legs,” Vahidi supported such an approach.

Vahidi served as defense minister until 2013, after which he joined the Expediency Discernment Council, which advises the supreme leader.
