Today is the birthday of Tibor Cerna, the son of Kata and Jozef Cerna. He became a symbol of resistance against NATO troops during the bombing and after.

Tibor Jozef Cerna (Belgrade, November 8, 1978 – Košare, April 27, 1999) was a soldier of the Yugoslav Army, which he joined in June 1998. As commander of a rifle squad of the 125th motorized brigade, he participated in the defense of Yugoslavia during the criminal NATO bombing, and heroically died defending the Košare outpost near Đakovica.
“As his comrades from the unit in Košara testify, during the battles on April 27, 1999, Cerna voluntarily left his shelter to help locate the position of the enemy sniper, probably a member of the French Foreign Legion, who had been causing a lot of problems for the VJ for days. After leaving the trench, Cerna was hit by a bullet in the chest, but, although seriously wounded, he managed to stay on his feet until the next bullet hit him in the neck, which was the first time that sniper had fired twice from the same place. Thanks to Tibor’s sacrifice, the VJ sniper discovered the enemy’s position and liquidated him.
“Tibor Cerna is one of 108 members of the Yugoslav Army who died defending the Košare outpost area in 1999, when they were attacked by a far superior enemy – the operational group “Jastreb”, part of the NATO forces, numbered about 5,000 people, as well as members of the so-called “KLA” with the regular Albanian army.
“The aggressors acted on our soldiers for 67 days, but failed to conquer that position. The battle for Košara officially ended on June 14, 1999, when the Yugoslav Army, pursuant to the Kumanovo Agreement with the KFOR forces, withdrew from this location.
