Students in the blockade of higher education institutions in Belgrade have sent an open letter to the Government of Serbia, demanding the fulfillment of two requests by June 28, 2025, at 9 PM.

“The first request is for the Government, in accordance with Article 109 of the Constitution of the Republic of Serbia, to submit a reasoned proposal to the President of the Republic of Serbia for the dissolution of the National Assembly, with the aim of calling early parliamentary elections by 9 PM on June 28, 2025.

The second request is for the Government to appeal to the Ministry of Internal Affairs to cease the allegedly reported gathering in Pionirski Park and Trg Nikole Pašića Street by 9 PM on June 28, 2025, in accordance with Article 18 of the Law on Public Assembly, which refers to Article 8 of the same Law,” the students stated in the open letter.

“The current Government received its mandate from the Parliament of Serbia, which does not reflect the current political situation in the country. The regime has shown that it no longer has the capacity to lead the country through the biggest socio-political crisis in the past few decades.”

According to them, the largest protests in Serbia’s history have “delegitimized this government,” which is why they demanded early parliamentary elections back on May 5.

“We believe that elections are the fundamental mechanism of every democratic society brought to this level of distrust in institutions, and that an alternative solution to this crisis does not exist,” the students added.

Regarding the gathering of “students who want to study,” the students believe that Pionirski Park and its surroundings have been “usurped for more than three months, despite numerous requests from citizens addressed to the competent institutions.”

“Our request is addressed to the Government because the MUP has not responded to previous complaints and reports from citizens, and also because members of the MUP, who are securing the gathering in the mentioned area, have in several situations failed to act officially,” it is added.

The students stated that they consider these demands justified, in the interest of the wider public, and that their actions so far have proven that they do not advocate for and oppose any form of violence.

“On Saturday, June 28, a gathering will be held in Belgrade, where we expect a large number of dissatisfied citizens to be present, and we cannot predict the further steps of the citizens after the official end of the gathering,” the open letter states.

Given that these same citizens, as they added, both informally and formally have already repeatedly presented the same demands, the students “appealed for the last time” for their fulfillment in order to “prevent the culmination of civil and student dissatisfaction.”

“We expect that in case of non-fulfillment of the stated demands within the given deadline, the citizens of Serbia will be ready to take all existing measures of civil disobedience in order to protect their basic right to a free and legitimate democratic system,” it is added in the open letter to the Government of Serbia.

The students added that they will soon publish more information about the protest on Vidovdan.

“We remain in this fight until the end. See you on Vidovdan. ULTIMATUM. It’s over when we say it’s over,” their Instagram post adds, with a message that more information will be published on all official pages of Students in Blockade.

As a reminder, students have scheduled a new protest in Belgrade for June 28, on Vidovdan.
