One of the two members of the US National Guard attacked by an Afghan suspect on Wednesday has died from her injuries, US President Donald Trump announced. Trump said in a televised address yesterday that 20-year-old Sara Backstrom from West Virginia, a National Guard member, who was severely injured in the attack, has died.
The injured National Guard member, 24-year-old Andrew Wolf, is in serious condition and fighting for his life, Trump said. The suspect in the severe wounding of two West Virginia National Guard members in Washington, a few blocks from the White House, is an Afghan citizen who worked for the US intelligence agency CIA in his home country and emigrated to the US in 2021, US officials announced yesterday.
Before emigrating from Afghanistan, the 29-year-old suspect, Rahmanullah Lakhanwal, worked in an Afghan army special unit supported by the CIA, his unnamed relative told the AP. Lakhanwal has been charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
