In a competition of 2,000 culinary students from 15 countries at the 21st International Istanbul Gastronomy Festival, a team from the Leskovac Higher Business School, Department of Gastronomy, won 11 gold, 4 silver, and 1 bronze medal. They are also the recipients of the “Golden Ladle” as the overall winners of the competition.

After winning first place at the Gastro Cup of Serbia in Novi Sad at the end of November, gastronomy students from Leskovac, led by Professor Momčilo Conić, competed in Istanbul from December 18th to 22nd and won 16 medals.

Dishes made with chicken, pasta, team menu, and dessert are some of the categories in which the Leskovac students were the best.

“We competed in 16 categories, the students prepared their own recipes, these are the standards of the world chefs’ association where an ideal balance of carbohydrates and proteins must be found on the plate and 15 color tones that must be used in the entire procedure. This is proof that dedicated work, effort, and knowledge lead to the top,” Conić begins.

An additional reason for the success and the medals won, according to Conić, is the ingredients they used.

“We used our native ingredients from southern Serbia such as ajvar, sprža, dried plums, and walnuts in combination with sauces, and we did very well in the taste nomination,” says the professor.

Since the Leskovac students are enrolled in a dual education system, most of them are already working, and Momčilo Conić states that for now, their authentic and award-winning dishes can be tasted by people from Leskovac, Niš, and Belgrade.
