The NBA is preparing for a new financial earthquake, and at its epicenter is Nikola Jokić. The greatest Serbian basketball player of all time and leader of the Denver Nuggets, now 31 years old, is on the verge of signing a deal that would shatter all previous records and set new standards in the world of sports. According to the latest projections, Jokić could become the first player in the history of the world’s strongest basketball league to break the magical barrier of $70 million in annual salary.
“Supermax” option: If he declines his player option for the 2027/28 season, Nikola could sign a four-year contract worth an incredible $278 million. That would mean an average salary of $69.5 million per year, surpassing the record held by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
–“70 million per season” option: A shorter route would involve activating his existing option and signing a three-year extension worth $214 million. Under this scenario, Jokić would officially become the first player to earn more than $70 million in a single season.
What excites fans in Colorado more than the figures themselves is Jokić’s publicly stated desire to spend his entire career in Denver. Despite speculation and the pressure that comes with the modern NBA, the sturdy native of Sombor has remained loyal to the franchise he led to an NBA championship in 2023.
While Jokić’s stay appears to be a done deal, Denver’s front office is facing enormous challenges. New Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) rules and the so-called “secondary luxury tax apron” have tied the hands of the club’s executives.
