Although electricians, plumbers, welders, and shoemakers are in high demand and well-paid (their daily wages exceed 50 euros), fewer and fewer students are enrolling in these fields and educational profiles year after year. However, there are several vocational schools that are popular among eighth-graders, and as the application lists show, even excellent students enroll in them.
Year after year, there is a growing disinterest among eighth-graders in Serbia for secondary schools and occupations that are in short supply, although they are in high demand and well-paid. These are, as we have written many times, welders, painters, tilers, bakers, butchers… However, there are several vocational schools that are popular among students, and for some of them, interest has even increased.
Cosmetic Technician
A cosmetic technician has, I would say, always been one of the favorite fields of girls who have not shown outstanding knowledge in the entrance exam. However, in recent years, it has become noticeable that even students with excellent grades and a fairly good number of points collected in the entrance exam go to become cosmetologists. A cosmetic technician is a four-year program and is usually under the auspices of a medical school. In today’s world, it is very valued and profitable, and as you can see, beauty salons are popping up all the time and on every corner. Girls in this field acquire both theoretical and practical knowledge about facial, body, and nail care, and after finishing school, almost all of them find employment and get hired. Their average salary is 120,000 dinars.
Cook
A cook is a profession that students learn about in the Hospitality and Tourism School. In the last three to four years, there has been a particular increase in interest in becoming a cook, and why wouldn’t there be, when you can earn up to 200,000 dinars. Of course, the average salary for a cook is from 120,000 dinars and up. It should be borne in mind that this field is not easy to enroll in. For example, last year, for the Secondary Tourism School in Novi Beograd, which educates culinary technicians, it was necessary to achieve a minimum of 71.19 points to become a cook. The field is also found in some economic schools in Serbia or is under the auspices of a “hospitality and tourism school”.
Excavator Operator
While no one wants to be a tiler, painter, mason, or reinforcement worker, students literally fight over places for construction machinery operators. It sounds unbelievable, but it’s really true. Construction machinery operators are excavator operators and combined machine drivers, and they are quite in demand on our labor market. And not only in ours, but also abroad. This was confirmed to us by Professor Nebojša Crnomarković from the Zvezdara Construction School, who says that they enroll thirty children a year, but that they would be fully filled if they had more places available. “The average salary for construction machinery operators ranges from 90,000 to 120,000-130,000 dinars, and abroad the salary goes up to 3,500 euros. Our students are excellent and very good students. They came to us like that, and they managed to maintain their success, which I am extremely proud of. And how much this job is in demand, not only in Serbia but all over the world, is shown by the companies with which the school cooperates, which are already looking for students in the final years, no matter how many there are. They literally need them so much,” said Professor Crnomarković.

Agricultural Technician
The agricultural school has become quite popular in recent years among those students who were not top students. Thus, it can be enrolled by anyone who has a total (points from school + entrance exam) between 50 and 70 points. Specifically, to enroll in this field this year, it was necessary to have about 52.22 points. The profession of an agricultural technician is broad in the field of agriculture, which means that it is possible to find a job quickly after obtaining a diploma. In addition to a fixed salary of between 80,000 and 100,000 dinars, veterinarians in the field can earn additional money, which is why their monthly income is much higher.
Surveyor
Interest in the geodetic school is the same as ten years ago. A future geodetic technician at the Geodetic Technical School last year had 64.89 points. He works on drawing geodetic maps that are used for designing road and rail traffic, planning settlements, hydraulic structures, and this profession is, we can say, in short supply, while the salary of a surveyor is from 90,000 dinars and up.
