The Management Board of Radio Television of Serbia (RTS) announced today that it will file a report to the Regulatory Body for Electronic Media (REM) regarding the broadcast of the children’s program “Important Things” on the First Channel, due to a violation of the Rulebook on the Protection of the Rights of Minors in the field of media services.
At today’s session, the RTS Management Board discussed the events arising from the broadcast of the children’s program “Important Things” on the First Channel on September 27 at 12 p.m., and decided to file a report to REM for violating the Rulebook on the Protection of the Rights of Minors in the field of media services, according to the statement signed by RTS Management Board President Branislav Klanšček.
The Management Board considers that the content of the program was not in line with the previously approved synopsis, which envisioned that the child would follow his own thoughts and that “important things” would not be reached through the hairdresser’s provocation, RTS reports.
However, in the recorded material, the concept was deviated from and the boy was prompted to speak about political topics that were not appropriate for his age and maturity, contrary to the provisions of applicable laws and international conventions relating to the protection of children’s rights – including the Law on Public Media Services, the Law on Electronic Media, and the Rulebook on the Protection of the Rights of Minors.
The statement notes that the program “Important Things” was produced by Sens Production as executive producer.
Due to the seriousness of the situation, the Management Board requested that the General Director of RTS urgently carry out a procedure to determine the responsibility of all participants in the decision-making process regarding the preparation, content, and broadcast of the mentioned program, and that within an appropriate period inform the Management Board and the public about the measures taken.
