The expanded Rector’s College of the University of Belgrade condemned the attack on the dean of the Faculty of Philosophy in Niš, Natalija Jovanović, and said that it demands an urgent reaction from the competent authorities, not only in the direction of initiating proceedings and imposing an appropriate sanction on the perpetrator, but also taking measures to ensure the prevention of illegal violent acts against members of the academic community and other citizens.

“We emphasize that this act of violence should be viewed in the context in which it was committed, that is, in connection with the atmosphere that was created by slander, insults, threats and pressures from holders of high public office and tabloid media. We have already warned that continuous verbal attacks in the public space, to which the rector of our University is particularly exposed, represent a step towards open repression but also the creation of an environment that practically encourages violence against students and professors,” it was announced.

“We demand that institutions take measures to determine the responsibility of the media, as well as persons who, through their public appearances, influence the incitement of intolerance and conflict in society and put pressure on the judiciary, thereby endangering the safety of citizens. We remain united in defending the right of members of the academic community to peaceful and dignified protest in order to protect the public interest,” it was announced.
The dean of the Faculty of Philosophy, Natalija Jovanović, was attacked with a knife by a woman in Niš, and then the police took her away. At the Emergency Center in Niš, the dean’s hand wound was stitched up. The police ordered the detention of the woman who attacked the dean for up to 48 hours.
