The implementation of the Law on Foreigners in Kosovo has not yet begun, nor have the Kosovo authorities announced an implementation date so far. However, an information campaign is underway, while the decision on the starting date for the law’s application has not yet been published. At the same time, a measure prohibiting the driving of vehicles based on power of attorney should come into force on November 1.
The announced changes have caused concern among Serbs north and south of the Ibar, with various information circulating, but with the same trouble: what will happen to the cars they legally bought in Serbia and drive under power of attorney, and how will the implementation of the Law on Foreigners affect the daily living migration of the Serbian population residing in central Serbia, who live, work, and study in Kosovo.
Citizens warn that the new rules will further complicate their lives, while some point out that this is a pressure tactic aimed at the exodus of the Serbian community from Kosovo. Radio Goraždevac also spoke with them in Metohija’s settlements and in the North.
“I have a child born in Kragujevac who has lived here since 2004, finished school and university, and still cannot get a Kosovo ID card. Every three months they have to leave the country, which is completely illogical and frivolous,” one local resident said.
Some interlocutors estimate that such decisions represent part of a broader policy of pressure on Serbs.
“This is just another measure in the policy of ethnic cleansing of Serbs, clearly motivated by anti-Serbian politics and Srbophobia,” the reactions state.
Additional concern was expressed by a group of Serbian non-governmental organizations from Kosovo, which today requested the introduction of a moratorium on the implementation of the Law on Foreigners, assessing that its implementation in its current form would mean a serious threat to daily life and open discrimination against the Serbian community.
As they emphasize, lasting solutions can only be found at the negotiating table.
