Students are organizing a “door-to-door” campaign again this weekend in several places across Serbia. As part of the working unit “A Student in Every Village,” a group of students today is also visiting the village of Darosava, in the municipality of Aranđelovac, where local elections are being held this year.

In the center of Darosava, as reported by an N1 reporter, the students set up a stand where they are handing out flyers, and later in the day they will also organize a “door-to-door” action.

Luka Savić from this village, a student at the University of Belgrade’s Faculty of Electrical Engineering, recalls that the idea for “A Student in Every Village” originated precisely at that higher-education institution.

“The initiative ‘A Student in Every Village’ itself originated at my home faculty, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, several months ago. It will turn out that this action is one of the most successful student actions since we began the blockades,” Luka emphasizes.

He points out that Darosava is one of the largest villages in this region, but that the students will try to visit almost all residents and talk with them.

“To hear about the problems they have at the local level, as well as their opinions—what they think about our organizing (…) That kind of media silence, or rather brainwashing by the media, is crucial precisely in these small places, where there aren’t many free media outlets or other key sources of information,” Luka believes.

He says that experience so far has shown that people are, above all, confused when they see students at their door who have come to talk to them.

“They are simply surprised that we came right to their house, they ask some basic questions, who we are. They see that we most certainly are not Ustaše, that we are not someone who wants to destroy this country. Somehow everyone expects that someone is doing something for personal gain. We are actually doing this for gain, but the only gain is not for us to get something personally, but to get a country in which we will be able to live tomorrow with our families,” Luka says.

Local elections in the municipality of Aranđelovac have not yet been called, and according to legal deadlines, they should be held in the first half of this year.
