Partizan’s basketball players opened the new EuroLeague season with a defeat. The black-and-whites lost away to Dubai with a score of 89:76 (28:18, 19:22, 21:16, 21:20).

We witnessed a rather efficient game at the EuroLeague opener in the United Arab Emirates. The home team had an unreal start from the three-point line (hitting all of their first six shots from distance), while on the other side Partizan tried to find its chance in transition.

It took some time for Željko Obradović’s team to read the home side’s plan, which at moments played at a very fast pace, though it must be emphasized that Partizan itself missed a large number of easy shots, especially at times when they could have gotten back into the game. In the end, that was decisive for Dubai to record an extremely easy and convincing win.

The game started with “shooting” on both ends. Both Dubai and Partizan were accurate from distance, but Davis Bertans left the biggest mark of all, hitting three triples and reaching 11 points in just five minutes. That led the hosts to a double-digit lead after about eight minutes of play.

The difference was exactly ten points at the end of the first quarter (28:18), and Partizan could not “settle down” at the start of the second period either, as Dubai at one point led by as much as +14.

Željko Obradović responded with a timeout, after which Partizan, little by little, cut the margin down to seven by halftime and stayed in the game heading into the continuation.

Just when Partizan’s fans thought everything was probably falling into place, when the Belgrade team took a one-point lead at the start of the third quarter after a scoring run, a new collapse of the visiting team’s game followed.

Simply nothing was going right for Obradović’s side, and very quickly Dubai was back to a double-digit lead. Not only that, but the home team reached its maximum advantage, which kept growing by the minute. Heading into the final 10 minutes, it was +12 for the team from the Emirates.

But that was not the end of the agony, as Dubai managed to go on a 5:0 run to reach +17, forcing Obradović to call another timeout in an attempt to somehow turn things around, though the situation on the court did not look good for his team. He did not succeed, as the hosts continued to play their game and reached the magical +20.

In the end, the only question was by what margin Dubai would seal the victory at the EuroLeague opener. The black-and-whites must now regroup and try to achieve a better result in Belgrade against Olimpia on Thursday at the Arena.
