Veterans of Serbia’s most elite military unit, the 63rd Parachute Brigade, addressed a letter to the Republican Electoral Commission and directly to its president, Vladimir Dimitrijević.
The paratroopers reminded RIC members of their obligation to comply with the law and the responsibility they bear under it. We are publishing their letter in full:
“Dear Mr. V. Dimitrijević,
Dear members of the Republican Electoral Commission,
We are addressing you as former members of the 63rd Parachute Brigade, people who risked their lives and shed blood for the freedom, peace and prosperity of our homeland.
Today, as Serbia faces a serious political and social crisis, we consider it our civic and moral duty to remind you of the weight of the office you hold and the responsibility that comes with it.
Article 52 of the Constitution of the Republic of Serbia guarantees the right to vote and its legal protection.
Article 2 of the Law on the Election of Members of Parliament stipulates that elections are free and direct and that citizens elect their representatives on the basis of universal and equal suffrage.
These provisions are not mere formalities. They represent an obligation for all bodies involved in the electoral process, especially those entrusted with ensuring that it is conducted lawfully.
We expect you to make every decision impartially, on the basis of the law and established facts, to consider every objection through the prescribed procedure, and not to place any political interest above the rights of citizens.
We remind you that collective decision-making does not mean automatic exemption from personal responsibility.
Any potential legal liability of an individual is determined on the basis of their specific conduct, the evidence and the applicable legal provisions.
We are not accusing anyone in advance, nor are we prejudging anyone’s guilt. But we consider it our duty to state clearly that holding office cannot serve as an excuse for unlawful conduct or for knowingly neglecting obligations prescribed by law.
We understood our oath to the homeland as an obligation, not a formality.
We expect you to understand your duty in the same way.
We are not asking you to side with any political option.
We demand that you stand on the side of the Constitution and the law.
Because elections do not belong to the government, political parties or the electoral administration. They belong to the citizens of Serbia, whose will must be protected.
Power is temporary. Positions are temporary.
Responsibility for one’s own actions remains.
Respectfully,
Former members of the 63rd PARACHUTE BRIGADE, who, since November 1, 2024, have stood alongside the people in insisting that those responsible for the deaths of 17 innocent victims of state corruption on an unprecedented scale in the history of modern Serbia be identified and convicted.
For the freedom, peace, honor and prosperity of our homeland.”
This is what the letter sent by veterans of the 63rd Parachute Brigade to the Republican Electoral Commission says.
